Blue zones

In order for Jefferson to become a Blue Zones school, they had to earn at least 46/69 points by implementing and enforcing policies. The blendED Academy chose policies that would benefit the school the most and worked to implement and enforce them. After working to implement these policies, Jefferson ended up getting 49/69 points.
Things Jefferson was already doing:
  • Establish a health-and-wellness council that meets regularly at the school
  • Enforce a tobacco-free campus
  • Redesign the lunchroom to nudge students into choosing healthier foods
  • Update cafeteria equipment to support provision of healthier foods
  • Require that students are physically active during the majority of time in physical education class
  • Celebrate birthdays and other events involving food once a month only
  • Install a salad or fruit-and-vegetable bar in the cafeteria

Things that blendED Academy implemented and enforced were:
  • Discontinue using unhealthy foods for fundraisers
  • Prohibit the sale and consumption of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages on campus, including those brought from home
  • Discontinue using food as rewards
  • Prohibit unhealthy food and beverage (e.g., sodas, sweets, etc.) advertisements on school grounds
  • Limit vending-machine access during the school day
  • Prohibit consumption of food and beverages, other than water, in classrooms and hallways
  • Do not use physical activity as a punishment
  • Create and implement a farm-to-school program
  • Plant and maintain a school garden
  • Establish a healthy snack-cart program (smoothies)
  • Offer a purpose workshop for juniors or seniors in high school
